【EDI = Equity/Equality, Diversity and Inclusion】
Diversity means a range of both individual and group differences which embraces multiple facets including race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, country of origin, culture, age, physical and mental ability, spiritual/religious beliefs, gender identity and sexual orientation etc.
【Social diversity entails the need for equality or equity】
In short: giving everyone the same
Equality mostly means sharing an equal amount of opportunities or resources with each person.
【Equality =/= Equity】
In short: making everyone the same by giving differently
Equity refers to a pattern or an approach towards equal opportunities, fairness and justice which subtly differs from equality.
Equity takes the different starts of each individual/group into consideration and then ensures that everyone has the same level of access to opportunities or resources.
The strategy is by no means declining the advantages of the better off but rather increasing the advantages of the worse off.
【Diversity and equity are inadequate without inclusion】
In short: a feeling of being valued resulting in empowered participation
Diversity and equity may be inadequate for the creation of a friendly and effective multicultural apparatus and warranting social justice on campus.
Students and staff also need opportunities and platforms to communicate effectively with each other, speak for themselves, and affect the real decision-makers.
Inclusion aims at diverse people with different identities being able to fully participate in all aspects of the work of an organisation, including leadership positions and decision-making processes.
Accordingly, universities are supposed to remove obstacles to participation and contribution, guarantee the acceptance of diverse people as “insiders” and valued group members, and allow these people to retain their uniqueness within the group.
