Project Title The Attitudes of Higher Education Leaders towards Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI): The Role of Emerging Technologies
Diverse groups such as minoritised students in Hong Kong have a disproportionately low participation rate in higher education compared to majority Chinese students. Those who succeed to get into universities are still faced with insurmountable challenges to secure a job rightly matching to their qualifications.
Higher education sector has a prime responsibility to promote true values of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) to ensure equitable educational opportunities for minoritised students and equipping them with the skills necessary for future employment and to lead fulfilling lives. However, little is known about how higher education sector leaders prioritise and fulfil such a responsibility.
Against this background, emerging technologies have introduced a new environment on higher education campuses. Yet the extent to which these technologies can also foster equitable learning environments remains to be addressed. Moreover, the misuse of these technologies may hinder EDI education in terms of success, skills development and the effects on social capital. Still, little has been addressed about school leaders’ responses and responsibilities to the use of these technologies.
Given the stated background, this project aims to examine:
[1] What are the attitudes of higher education leaders concerning equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI)?
[2] What EDI policies have been implemented and what have been their impacts?
[3] To what extent are emerging technologies helpful in achieving EDI objectives?
This will be a qualitative study. The specific methods will include documents analysis (policy and strategy documents, and publicly available web-pages and promotional materials) and in-depth interviews with higher education leaders. Thematic analysis will be used for data analysis and to develop future EDI strategies.
[1] Help education leaders understand the knowledge and skills needed for leading and supporting EDI activities and the utilisation of emerging technologies.
[2] Help policy makers review and modify EDI related policy and practices including the role of emerging technologies.
[3] Hundreds of staff and thousands of students at the higher education institute will benefit from the project as a result of improved EDI policy and practices, and enhanced leadership to implement them.
